Three rules for healthy eating

By: Judy Davie

We all know there are a lot of rules or, as they are more leniently referred to as guidelines, for eating a healthy diet, but what if there were only three you had to stick to; three rules passed (and prosecuted on if not adhered to) for healthy eating? This was a conversation I had with a group of friends over breakfast yesterday. After some angst and deliberation these were my three.

  • Eat five serves of vegetables a day.
  • Cut out all soft drinks and diet soft drinks altogether.
  • Cut out all white processed carbohydrates.

When I asked Naturopath Lisa Costa-Bir what her three rules would be, she, like I had done the day before struggled with her list. After great debate she came up with her list.

  • Drink enough water each day so your urine is clear and not smelly.
  • Eat foods that looks as close to their natural state as possible i.e. wholefoods.
  • Eat at least five serves of various seasonal vegetables in season a day.

Dr Joanna McMillan had similar issues narrowing down her three but finally came up these.

  • Minimise the amount of processed carbohydrates in your diet.
  • Fill half your plate with veggies at lunch and dinner
  • Never drink soft drinks

Would anyone else like to have a go?

Since I don't like soft drinks, that one doesn't need to go on my list!

    1. Drink plenty of water
    2. Limit alcohol and coffee intake
    3. Eat seasonal foods as close to their natural state as possible

Like Bee I also do not drink soft drinks, so here's my list.

    1. Drink at least 1 lt water per day more if I can
    2. Cut out alcohol or have one only small wine spritzer (1/2 white wine, 1/2 soda/mineral water)
    3. Eat more 'raw' foods, vegies nuts etc.

*Drink water or herbal teas regularly throughout the day
*Eat as close to nature as you can with your food groups for the day
*Don't eat whilst doing other things - take time for your food to digest

I sometimes eat my dinner at night whilst watching TV. I find I eat much slower - feel full "quicker" and therefore don't over-eat. Raw nuts are good, but not roasted regardless of they are unsalted or salted

This is quite an interesting thought. What three ways to keep healthy as to what to injest. Clean rainwater with any organic flavourings if desired. Orgainic foods of any discription as long as they are not contaminated and as mentioned, "in season" or obtained locally. The third is to use you brain to understand what your body is saying to you as you absorb the substances.
