Natures immune boosting winter strategy

By: Judy Davie - The Food Coach with information sourced from Qld strawberries

It would be hard to forget 2018 when the Australian strawberry growers' livelihood was threatened due to public fear of consuming berries tampered with needles. The following year growers battled through drought, and this year the unexpected backlash from Covid 19 and unfavourable weather saw the winter's strawberry season get off to a slow start.

I am happy to tell you now that now, right at the time when we most need it, QLD strawberry supply has peaked with a 30 percent increase in volume of strawberries arriving in our local greengrocer over the next week. With increased supply comes a reduction in price which means you can stock up on these incredibly delicious immune boosting berries at a great price.

The strawberry season is dictated to by nature and berries can only be picked when they are ripe and ready so it's our good fortune that nature chose for us to wait. South of Queensland the temperature has plummeted, and Covid aside, the colder weather makes us more susceptible to colds and flu - and what a delicious preventative medicine strawberries are.

For immune boosting, the nutritional goodness of strawberries is impressive. Check out the list of health benefits below to see why you should take advantage of these glorious winter berries while you can.

  • Strawberries are great for the maintenance of skin; containing salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), and ellagic acid, which reduce hyperpigmentation, prevent acne, and remove dead skin cells
  • Reduce inflammation - Strawberries reduce elevated blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a substance produced by the liver that increases inflammation in the body.
  • Strawberries are a natural source of powerful antioxidants, which help to improve the skin's elasticity. They contain more vitamin C, per weight than oranges, which helps to brighten and tone, along with both malic and citric acids, which gently cleanse and exfoliate.
