13 compelling reasons to dramatically reduce your sugar intake

Back in the old days people used to say sugar was bad for our teeth. These days we know it's far worse than that. While we all enjoy a little sweet treat now and again, you may be surprised at how much sugar you do eat each day. Here are some important reasons why you would do well to drastically reduce your intake.

Excess sugar leads to:

  • 1.Consuming too much added sugar increases heart disease risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and inflammation.

  • 2.A high-sugar diet may lead to obesity and insulin resistance, both of which are risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

  • 3.Too much sugar can lead to obesity, insulin resistance and inflammation, all of which are risk factors for cancer.

  • 4.Consuming too much added sugar, especially from sugary beverages, increases your risk of weight gain and obesity and can lead to visceral fat accumulation.

  • 5.High sugar intake from soft drinks and fruit juice containing fructose may cause resistance to the hormone leptin, which regulates hunger and tells your body to stop eating.

  • 6.Spikes in blood sugar and insulin increase androgen secretion, oil production and inflammation, ultimately leading to acne.

  • 7.A diet rich in added sugar and processed foods may increase depression risk in both men and women.

  • 8.Sugary foods can increase the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), compounds which are suspected to play a key role in skin aging

  • 9.High-sugar foods can negatively impact your energy levels by causing a spike in blood sugar followed by a crash.

  • 10.Eating too much sugar may lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which excessive fat builds up in the liver.

  • 11.Added sugars raise uric acid levels in the blood, increasing the risk of developing or worsening gout.

  • 12.Consistently high blood sugar levels can cause damage to the delicate blood vessels in your kidneys. This can lead to an increased risk of kidney disease.

  • 13.High-sugar diets can lead to impaired memory and have been linked to an increased risk of dementia
