The sight, smell and taste of chocolate is enough to lift anyone's spirits, and there's even science to back that up - just as long as you don't eat too much of it. The same is true for hot chocolate - that steamy chocolatey drink we cup our hands around on a cold day and feel immediately comforted.
But unless you make it yourself, hot chocolate is not necessarily a healthy drink. Making your own from pure cocoa is tastier, cheaper and often healthier and it's very easy. This version uses low fat, fresh lactose free milk which is suitable for anyone who finds regular milk hard to digest.

Ingredients
2 cups low fat milk, (you could use lactose free if you like)
2 tsp cocoa
1 tiny pinch chilli powder, (optional)
2 sticks cinnamon
Method

Gently heat the milk in a small pan but do not bring it to the boil.

Spoon the cocoa and a pinch of chilli (if you like things a little bit spicy) into a small jug and pour a little milk into the jug and using a small whisk, stir to make a paste. Add a little more milk and continue to stir to make sure all the cocoa is well combined. Return the cocoa mixture to the pan, and whisk in the sugar.

Heat for another minute or so, while you continue to whisk the cocoa, without boiling the milk.

Serve in cups with a cinnamon stick in each cup.
