Kraft Peanut Butter: Top facts in a nutshell

By: The Food Coach

Today KRAFT FOODS launches a new variety to its KRAFT Peanut Butter range - a specially formulated peanut butter with No Added Sugar or Salt.

To celebrate the launch of the new peanut butter variety, KRAFT has declared today National Peanut Butter Day and is encouraging all peanut butter enthusiasts to mark the occasion by spreading peanut butter on toast for breakfast, eating it in a sandwich or however they like to enjoy it.

Created with health conscious peanut butter lovers in mind, No Added Sugar or Salt Peanut Butter is made up of 91% (minimum) lightly roasted peanuts. It contains high quality hi oleic peanuts, which have a fatty acid combination similar to olive oil, with more of the 'good fats', essential to a balanced diet.

Although peanuts are high in fat and energy, they are also nutrient dense, which means there are lots of nutrients per kilojoule. One serving of No Added Sugar or Salt Peanut Butter provides 18g of peanuts, which is just under the recommended handful (30g) of nuts Dietitians advise we should consume most days of the week for good health.

The new peanut butter variety is a healthier way to enjoy Australia's favourite peanut butter spread as it's packed with peanuts - not sugar or salt - while still retaining a rich, delicious taste.

Kraft Foods Nutritionist, Jenni Cooper, describes how peanut butter can be an important part of a healthy balanced eating plan: "We should all aim to consume a healthy balanced diet, rich in mono-unsaturated fat. Being of plant origin, No Added Sugar or Salt Peanut Butter is naturally cholesterol free and is rich in the good fats, mono-unsaturated fats, which are important for your heart's wellbeing."

The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends that Australian adults limit their intake of salt to no more than 6 grams (or ~1 teaspoon (2300mg sodium)) a day. However many of us eat more than this. In Australia, the estimated average consumption of salt is 9g per day (3500mg sodium).

Ms Cooper has described the launch of the new Peanut Butter variety as a show of KRAFT's commitment to continuously respond to changing consumer taste and food choice preferences: "We know that many Australians are becoming more health conscious, want to reduce their sugar and sodium intake and look for foods which help them feel healthier, when consumed as part of a balanced diet. Just like our existing peanut butter range, this new variety has no added colours, flavours or preservatives, and offers a healthy option which is nutritious and tastes delicious."
KRAFT recommends enjoying No Added Sugar or Salt Peanut Butter as part of a balanced breakfast, spread on wholemeal or wholegrain toast with a serving of fruit and a serving of dairy like for example; low-fat yoghurt with a cup of berries or two apricots or kiwi fruits.

As with all Kraft Peanut Butter, the new variety is made with wholesome ingredients and contains no added colours, flavours and preservatives. What's more it's also gluten free making it suitable for people who are sensitive to gluten.
KRAFT Peanut Butter No Added Sugar or Salt is now available in Smooth and Crunchy varieties and comes in a 325g jar for RRP $4.54. The new product will appear in supermarkets across the country from today and can be found in the spreads aisle alongside other KRAFT Peanut Butter varieties.
