Malt vinegar is an aged and filtered product made from malt. Malt is the result of grain that has been soaked, allowed to germinate and converted from starch to sugar. It has a distinctive smell and flavour, well known in beer.

Vinegar is an acid and, used as a preservative, its shelf-life is almost indefinite. Colour changes, haze and sediment are not an indication of the product deteriorating. Vinegar can be stored in the cupboard.
