The elderberry is a black berry found on bushes in Europe and Asia. The berries are made into wine, jam and syrups. Elder is a Saxon word for "fire". Young branches were hollowed out to make whistles and pipes. The berries are also used to soothe the throat during colds. The flowers are used in make-up to disguise eye wrinkles.
