To Buy:
Difficult to find. Buy from specialised greengrocers. Canned loquats in syrup are available in Asian stores but are not recommended due to the high sugar content. Avoid buying any damaged, discoloured or bruised fruit.
To Store:
Store under-ripe loquats at room temperature, away from sun and moisture. Once ripe, refrigerate.
Tips & Tricks:
Do not eat, chew, or swallow the seeds (or eat the peel). The loquat seed is toxic - remove the seed before cooking.
Cooking Tips:
Peel and seed the fruit and serve with sliced banana, orange sections and grated coconut. Some people prepare spiced loquats (with cloves, cinnamon, lemon and vinegar) in glass jars. Loquats also make good jam and jelly.
